The Club is funded by an annual membership fee of just £10! For this, members receive a newsletter issued four times a year, which details trips and events, often at a substantial discount to what would be available to the private individual.
A more recent benefit for those with email and/or internet access has been our internet message board service and chat room where members can communicate with the group in general to discuss ideas and make arrangements. Many outings are organised at short notice and it’s worth using the internet message board to keep abreast of what’s happening. It’s really worth keeping up with events organised at short notice which never make it to the newsletter.
For those who wish to contact and get together with other members, you will receive a list of other members’ telephone numbers and email addresses in their area, with ages of children, however if you do not wish to give out your contact details, this will be withheld. Details of Local Co-ordinators and days out are also listed in the newsletter, the latest copy of which will be sent to you when you join. There is also the SPTC event line.
The benefits of belonging to the SPTC are many. Children make friends and enjoy playing together which in turn can relieve the pressure on parents. Many parents also welcome the company of other adults, the opportunity to share experiences and help each other resolve problems that seem to crop up at one time or another for all single parents. By getting together it is often possible to get the events/holidays at a cheaper rate than if you were on your own.
The Club recognises that, in many ways, single mums are better at 'networking' than their male counterparts. Single dads often feel left 'out in the cold,' choosing whether to take their children to the cinema or a meal on access days and weekends. The SPTC offers a constructive social outlet, which aims to provide for both the needs of the children and those of the single parent.
A wide range and variety of holidays and events have been organised by members over the years ranging from meeting up in the local park to 2 months travelling through Australia. Examples of recent holidays that SPTC members have enjoyed were Disneyland in Florida and Paris, Greece, Italy and Australia to name a few. In the UK there are usually summer holidays organised as well as breaks at Christmas and New Year. Our AGM at the end of May is combined with a weekend away and over 100 adults and children frequently stay in a Youth Hostel in different areas each year and 30+ families camp nearby often making it a week long holiday. In addition to this there are YHA Weekends to hostels the length and breadth of the country along with day trips and social gatherings. In many areas there are established local groups who are looking for new members to join in and help organise regular outings.
All these holidays and days out are just to give you an idea of things that have been organised; however once you are a member the possibilities are in fact endless! The world is your oyster!
